The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
