The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
