Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
